Fitness is my passion!
Something Interesting, Maybe Thought Provoking, Always Positive.
To Change Your Mind about keeping healthy is a mission impossible for some people. Or so they think. Not many people like 'change' but I love it because it could mean that I may turn out to be a better version of myself if I try. Most things in life take effort but we lack the motivation to give it a go. This means we are probably living half a life. Just think of how many hours we spend whinging about what we don't have and not focussing on what we do have. If you have health you are King! Especially these days with ill health being mass produced through all the junk we eat, all the pollution in the air, the water we drink, what we watch and even the company we keep. Because to be truly healthy takes a holistic approach. When we embark upon something we may at first think 'this is long', 'I don't see the point' or 'it's hard work' but after it becomes habit (21 days in succession) and we see results we should keep going. If we stop, we've come all this way for nothing. Most importantly here, looking after our health is OUR responsibility, it's OURS, WE own it. It's so precious and people take it for granted. If you are overweight/underweight and have no major health issues be thankful and keep moving. If you have a goal, jog towards it. So many people let their health go because they are lazy or do not cherish it. On the other end of the spectrum so many are ill and cannot go back. I am very thankful for my health and have no ailments to date. I am a mother, sister, aunty, friend, teacher, wife, carer, business woman and people depend upon me to look after them. I cannot let them down but so most importantly I need to look after number 1 first so I can wear all these hats and still be standing at the end of the day. I say again - Your health is YOUR responsibility TAKE CARE OF IT!
Have you ever wondered where all the time goes?...Of course you have - your'e a mother for crying out loud. Everyday we get up and it's barely light, then a few minutes later it's noon, then after ten minutes it's 12 midnight! I still ask this question in every passing moment to myself and whomever else may be listening but it still happens. Time is a funny thing because it always seems to not like being watched so will act up and run away fast when you're not looking like a naughty child, The Miscreant! So in our minds as good, law abiding citizens we try to catch up with it to restrain it from causing us such distress. But seriously though, we know it's futile so we cram everything into an expensive small metaphoric bag and walk around with it as if we owned it. As luck would have it, I have a suggestion that may help to improve your chances of getting more done, it's called organisation and preparation and prioritisation. Or 'Preorgior' as I have come to affectionally call it. This means we think, plan, decide before we get to the point of pulling out our hair or jumping out of the ground floor window. I know it may sound familiar and even something that 'other people do' but you can now have it too. 3 for the price of One and who doesn't love a bargain?
Let me give you my top 5 the tips on how to actually do this in very simple terms.
1. Say 'NO' to some things that you cannot do. i.e, friends hair for her date night, new online course, catering for over 100 people by Saturday and today is Thursday. taking on tasks that make you have to drop what you're doing there and then and pull a small strand of hair out mentally can be exciting but also affords you no time to get what you need really need done. Just 'SAY NO' People!
2. Plan your week. Get up on a Sunday and plan your next 5 days, the weekend can take care of itself. It clears your mind and gives you a clear path to achieve your goals.
3. Delegate. Give others a slice of this lovely over processed meal that they can chew on while you get on with what you can do. If they need to be taught, teach them your method. If not give them their portion and deadlines.
4. Cook food in advance. So much easier for life. Collate all recipes in a folder for the week. Go shopping for the ingredients. Pick a day to cook and freeze. Then take out and defrost. Many wonderfully nutritious foods can be frozen. Reheat on the stove/oven. Leave vegetables to be cooked at the time unless using a method that requires you to do so.
5. Make time for sleep. Aim to to bed by a certain time and stick to it. Put your children in bed at a reasonable time. Get a few more hours in on chores, work, bath and such and vehemently shut your eyes at the hour on the hour. No social media, no talking, no movie watching, just close your eyes and try your best to get back on that Circadian Rhythm train that left so long ago.
I basically now have to go as I only assigned myself 10 minutes to do this write up and am dangerously encroaching upon time to get ready and teach a class. Now you have Preorgior, go and use him all the way up! :-P
As you may or may not know, I have taken Swinging n Slingin LIVE out to family park and indoor events. This has been an experience that has given me an opportunity to show this brilliant class and how fun it is. I've met people who had heard of it, were intrigued but have never attended. So what's evident here - the proof of the pudding is in the eating! Until someone has tasted the real flavour, dipped their toe, whatever the analogy, it takes the visual or taking part before they find out that it really is a fab and effective way to get fit. It can be extremely endearing when I get feedback like, 'I love this' and 'I really enjoyed that' during of after a class and the promise that they will return to subsequent classes. Although I want people to attend my classes because it means I'm coming to teach a room with actual people in it, it should also be looked at as a great benefit to both child and adult spending quality time doing something that is healthy for them to do together. I wish that there were activities like these when my daughter was a baby that meant we could engage better. I feel like I've missed out somewhat on the babywearing bond. Whether I teach the class LIVE or at a regular class its always great and the music uplifts my soul. A definite positive by-product of Swingin n Slingin is the soothing effect of a baby falling into a slumber, reassuring the parents that the baby is at peace with the activity taking place. There are so many times we do not want to multi-task but having an effective workout with your baby present should not be one of them! Onwards and upwards - Long live Family Fitness Fun!
Ok, so I haven't been on here for awhile and I must confess I have been slacking! I keep having something I want/need to get off my chest but then I get sidetracked to go and hang out washing or something mumsy/wife type or another. It seems my mind is completely packed to the brim with a roloadex of 'To Do's' and has me getting even scattier (is that a word) than ever before (I literally never thought I could get any worse!) but I think it comes with starting a business and running a busy home. No scratch that, I am always moving, I have just added to my already full plate. My bad! LOL! I'm not complaining because during my crazy push to be crowned Mumpreneur of the Year, in between chores and promoting what I do on social media, teaching my adult and family fitness classes, going live at events and spending time with my family and friends, I have noticed a few things about the types of people up for exercising with their kid. Somehow it seems to have hit me like a train with me sprawled across the tracks. I wasn't ready for it. Everything I do I really put my all into and I can say I honestly adore it. Family fitness is not a new concept but some think it is and even treat it like it has just fallen from the sky like Chicken Licken! Do we all love our children? The answer is yes, I'm sure but why do some get up and burn calories by playing with their child/pushing a buggy/babywearing whilst dancing and not just watch? Is it a question of class? Is money a factor? But does exercising with your child have to be paid for or can you do it for free with abit of research (YouTube) or playing a game or two? Is it lack of self motivation? Is it a mentality thing? Environment? Afraid of change/something new? Stepping out of the comfort zone? Lack of knowledge? Don't care to bond? Someone said it takes 21 days for somebody to do something daily before it becomes habit. I think this is do-able with fitness as the results can be pretty quick if you work at it. I mean a child can be like a PT with all that running you ragged burning off all that young persons energy. All it needs is structure, so like instead of running after them and getting upset by the inconvenience, make it a game, run after them, catch them and then pick them up and swing them. Now it's sounding like bootcamp shuttle runs with kettlebell swings. Or go to the park and use the play area when they are using it. Monkey bars, pushing the roundabout, pushing them on the swings, tricep dips/press ups on the bench, races, hop, skip and jump around the play area. Think outside the proverbial box. Play areas are accessible to all and green spaces are full of them. So now I've cleared up the HOW, the WHY still remains unanswered. This is a question you should put to yourself. Why don't I do an activity with my child that could help us both be healthy? Answer the questions above and see what you come up with. Barriers in life are there to be broken down and stomped on like a step class. Let the CLASS reference be about a type of class you won't attend because it's pants and less about the CLASS structure you fall into.
The Swingin n Slingin! class today was the beginning of great things to come! The room was filled with the wonderful presence of who was supposed to be there - Mums and their babies. Result! All babies were positioned to face me and I have never felt more under pressure to make someone smile. But alas, none of them grimaced or cried or got bored (although a little baby boy at the back was able to breastfeed and nod off peacefully). We danced to funky tunes and the babies kicked their legs in mid-air to the beat. We proceeded to get down and tone the body with floor work and sang nursery rhymes to cool down. I was impressed by the aptitude of the mums and the vibe was infectious. So many complain about conventional exercise being boring and hate doing it but are still afraid to dip their toe in.
